There are two routes to becoming qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN); either through vocational (college) training or via a higher education (university degree) qualification. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). More information can be found here.
We are currently accepting applications from degree student veterinary nurses at AAS in Gloucester – here’s some more information about what a placement might look like for you at our practice.
Degree student nurses' experience
We would ideally like applications from 2nd/3rd year students as we currently do not have enough RVN's to be able to support a 1st year student.
Opportunities available for student nurses and working hours
Most of our students do one/two days a week at one of our two training practices – Abbeydale and Quedgeley. These are regular hours and enable both the students to come in and work alongside the RVN's and vets.
What we expect from our student nurses and what they can expect in return
We expect our students to always follow RCVS guidelines and be under the supervision of an RVN or vet when performing schedule three tasks. They will be expected once competent to be able to fulfil tasks which an RVN can complete, such as consultations, reception and theatre. We are a small first opinion practice made up of four branches in which we can offer a variety of diagnostics, including radiography (plus dental), ultrasounds, endoscopy and surgery. We also have a vet with an interest in exotics, which we are developing over time.
Travel and accommodation
Our nurses can get public transport, with buses from Gloucester train station, or they can drive, with parking available at all of our branches. We are unfortunately unable to offer any accommodation.
Are there any accessibility considerations that I might need to take into account at your practice?
Our Abbeydale branch has an upstairs area with, unfortunately, no disability accommodations, e.g. a lift. The practice has a quiet space for staff to take a break.
